After the storm
On March 29, 2024, I had the opportunity to capture the Good Friday procession in Valencia, Spain, a tradition where more than 30 Catholic religious brotherhoods and fraternities parade in costume to commemorate the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. The procession, which was normally scheduled for late afternoon, was significantly delayed due to a severe storm, giving me time to take photos of the pre-procession scenes, including costumed figures strolling through the city before their entrance, such as legionnaires ordering refreshments at a small restaurant where I had stopped. Among the fascinating details of the procession are the 'capirotes': the pointed hoods worn by the penitents. Once associated with humiliation during the Inquisition, they now symbolize humility and penance. The colours, too, carry a meaning: red evokes the blood of Christ, black mourning, and white purity.
